의료진, 환자 모두에게 공헌할 수 있는 기업 될 것
[편집자주]서울시의 산업진흥 및 중소기업 육성 정책의 효율적인 추진을 위해 설립된 서울산업진흥원(SBA)의 다양한 지원사업들이 관내 중소 스타트업들의 인큐베이팅 역할을 톡톡히 하며 주목받고 있다. 좋은 일자리 창출을 핵심 목표로 창업, 유통, 교육, 콘텐츠, 특허, R&D 등 다양한 서비스를 제공하고 있는 서울산업진흥원의 지원사업들은 중소 스타트업들이 '강소기업'으로 도약할 수 있는 밑거름이 되고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다. 이에 서울산업진흥원(SBA)과 디지털 경제신문 ‘비즈니스리포트’는 SBA의 지원사업 수혜를 통해서 성공한 많은 중소 스타트업들의 성공스토리를 기획특집기사로 연재한다.
"아 이런 것 있으면 참 좋을텐데..." 분야를 막론하고 일을 하다보면 자신의 업무를 매우 효율적으로 만들어 줄 기기나 시스템의 필요성을 느끼는 경우가 많다. 특히 의료분야에서는 더욱 그러한데, 의료기기의 필요성도 충분하고, 아이디어도 있지만 실제로 제작하기에는 현실적인 한계로 그냥 묻히는 경우가 대부분이다.
지난 2015년 양인철 대표가 설립한 (주)솔메딕스는 이처럼 사장되는 의료진들의 아이디어를 발굴해 신개념 의료기기를 개발하는 의료기기 개발전문 벤처기업이다. 지난 2016년 벤처기업 인증을 시작으로 사업성과 가능성을 인정 받아 2017년 하반기부터는 바이오 전문 투자사들로부터 투자를 지속적으로 유치하고 있다. 특히 지난 9월에는 GMP 생산 시설인 ‘MOSAIC Factory’를 완공하며 적극적인 시장 공략에 박차를 가하고 있다.
# 아이디어를 제품화해주는 플랫폼인 ‘MOSAIC Platform’
솔메딕스가 선보이고 있는 MOSAIC Platform은 의료기기 개발 플랫폼이다. 초기 임상 아이디어를 관련 전문가를 통해 임상적 유용성, 기술성, 시장성, 허가 및 보험수가 등을 진단해 제품 기획 단계부터 사업화 가능성을 분석, 개발 제품의 시장에서의 성공 가능성을 높이고 아이디어 제안자에게 수익을 돌려주는 비즈니스 모델이다. 솔메딕스는 현재까지 FIXWAY, ANGLELINE, LIGHTIN 등의 제품을 성공적으로 제품화했다.
양 대표는 "솔메딕스는 의료현장의 아이디어를 효율적으로 제품화 하기 위한 협력 비즈니스 모델인 MOSAIC Platform을 구축했다."라며 "의료기기 아이디어의 진단, 시작품 제작, 특허, 국가과제, 실증연구, 전임상연구, 시제품 개발, 기술이전, 제품 출시까지 MOSAIC Platform의 Co-Business 파트너들과 신개념 의료기기 개발을 위해 힘을 모으고 있다."고 말했다.
# 임상·공학·제조 분야 다양한 네트워크 구축, MOSAIC Factory 완공
솔메딕스의 경쟁력은 신개념 의료기기 개발 플랫폼인 MOSAIC Platform 구축과 더불어 임상·공학·제조 분야의 다양한 네트워크를 구축하고 있다는 점이다. 특히 회사 설립 이후 임상 의료진들의 아이디어를 성공적으로 상품화 시키는 것은 물론 보험수가 등을 고려한 안정적인 의료기기 시장 진입 전략을 보유하고 있다는 평가를 받고 있다.
솔메딕스는 지난 9월 글로벌 의약품 제조∙품질 관리 기준인 GMP 수준의 최첨단 설비와 시스템을 갖춘 의료기기 생산 시설인 MOSAIC Factory를 완공했다. 이번 MOSAIC Factory 구축을 통해 솔메딕스는 1등급부터 4등급까지 모든 등급의 고품질 의료기기를 제조할 수 있게 됐다. 또한 서울에 위치한 MOSAIC Factory의 우수한 접근성을 바탕으로 아직 제조 시설을 확보하지 못한 의료기기 스타트업들을 대상으로 위탁 생산 서비스도 제공할 계획이다.
양 대표는 "이번 MOSAIC Factory 오픈으로 솔메딕스는 의료 현장의 다양한 아이디어를 빠르게 제품화 할 수 있는 기반을 다지게 됐으며 특히 2등급 이상 의료기기 제품군의 신속한 인허가 획득에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다."고 말했다.

양 대표는 의료기기를 하는 기업들이나 구성원들이 단순히 이윤 추구만 쫓으면 안된다는 경영철학을 갖고 있다. 의료기기 스타트업들에게 MOSAIC Factory를 통해 위탁생산 서비스를 제공하는 것도 같은 맥락이다.
양 대표는 "의료기기산업이 돈이 되는 쪽으로 활성화되는 경향이 있지만 솔메딕스는 다소 그렇지 못하더라고 어려운 환자들에게 도움이 될 수 있 수 있는 제품도 상품화하려고 한다. 의료진과 환자들 모두에게 공헌할 수 있는 기업이 되고 싶다."고 포부를 밝혔다.
[Hidden Champion] Medical Devices MOSAIC Platform 'Solmedix'
Various support projects by the Seoul Industrial Promotion Agency (SBA), which was established to promote the Seoul city government's policies for promoting industrial development and fostering small and medium-sized enterprises, are drawing keen attention as they serve as incubators for small and medium-sized startups within the government. The Seoul Industrial Promotion Agency's support projects, which offer a variety of services, including startups, distribution, education, content, patents and R&D, with the key aim of creating good jobs, are said to be the foundation for small and medium start-ups to become "strong companies." As a result, SBA (Seoul Industrial Promotion Agency) and digital economic newspaper Business Report will publish success stories of many small and medium start-ups that have succeeded through SBA's support business.
"Oh, this would be great..."I often feel the need for a device or a system that would make my job very efficient. This is especially true in the medical field, most of which have ideas about medical devices and are simply buried under realistic limitations that are sufficient to produce.
Founded in 2015 by CEO Yang In-cheol, SolMedix is a company that specializes in developing medical devices that develop new concepts by exploring ideas of medical staff. Starting with certification of venture businesses in 2016, it has been continuously attracting investment from bio-specialized investment companies since the second half of 2017 as it has been recognized for its business performance and potential. In particular, it has been stepping up efforts to aggressively tap the market by completing its "MOSAIC Factory," a GMP production facility, in September.
# MOSAIC Platform, a platform for producting ideas
MOSAIC Platform, which is being introduced by Solmedics, is a platform for medical device development. It is a business model that analyzes the possibility of commercialization from the stage of product planning by diagnosing clinical usefulness, technicality, marketability, permits, and insurers through related experts, improving the chances of success in the market of development products and returning profits to the idea proposal. So far, SolMedix has successfully manufactured products such as FIXWAY, ANGELINE, and LIGHTIN.
"Solmetics has built the MOSAIC Platform, a cooperative business model for efficiently producting ideas from the medical field," said CEO Yang In-chul. "We are working with MOSAIC Platform's Co-Business partners to develop new ideas for medical devices, starting products, patents, national tasks, empirical research, full-time research, prototyping, technology transfer and product launch."
# Establishing diverse networks in clinical, engineering and manufacturing sectors, completing the MOSAIC Factory
SolMedix's competitive edge is that it is establishing variety of networks in clinical, engineering and manufacturing sectors along with establishment of MOSAIC Platform, which is a new concept medical device development platform. In particular, it is evaluated that the company has a strong advantage in successfully commercializing the ideas of clinical workforce since the establishment of the company, as well as having a strategy to enter the market for stable medical devices considering insurance companies, etc.
In September, SolMedix completed the construction of the MOSAIC Factory, a medical device production facility with state-of-the-art facilities and systems at the GMP level, a global standard for pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality control. Through establishment of MOSAIC Factory, SolMedics will be able to manufacture high-quality medical devices of all grades from first to fourth. Based on the excellent accessibility of MOSAIC Factory, located in Seoul, Solmedics also plans to provide commissioned production services to start-ups of medical devices that have yet to secure manufacturing facilities.
"The opening of the MOSAIC Factory paved the way for the rapid productization of various ideas in the field of medicine, and we hope it will help secure rapid licensing of second-class and higher-grade medical device products," Yang said.
# Make a product that can help patients
Yang has a management philosophy that companies or members of medical devices should not simply pursue profit-taking. In the same vein, it is also in the same vein that medical device startups are provided with consignment production services through the MOSAIC Factory.
"The medical device industry tends to be revitalized to make money, but Solmédix wants to commercialize a product that can help patients in need, even if it doesn't," Yang I want to be a company that can contribute to both the medical staff and the patients," he revealed his aspirations.
